What Do Central Service Instrument Technicians Do?

Central Service Instrument Technicians (CSITs) provide vital support in all patient care services and their work is essential for preventing infection.  They are responsible for knowing all of the tools used in an operating room, as well as sterilizing and packaging instruments used during surgery.

They are responsible for decontaminating, cleaning, processing, assembling, storing and distributing medical devices and supplies, and keeping records associated with sterilization monitors.

Central Service Instrument Technicians typically perform the following tasks:

  • Inspecting and cleaning tools and surgical equipment prior to sterilization.
  • Sterilizing equipment and making sure there are adequate supplies for surgery.
  • Placing cleaned instruments in sterilizers such as autoclaves.
  • Ordering, storing and distributing medical devices and supplies and instruments.
  • Maintaining records associated with sterilization monitors, orders, charges to patients and inventory.
  • Reporting potential equipment defects and equipment problems to staff.
  • Ensuring that sterile supplies are within their expiration date.
  • Maintaining a sterile environment.
