Medical Insurance Billers and Coders organize and manage health information data and are responsible for maintaining a patient’s health information, including their medical history, any symptoms they might be experiencing, results from examinations and tests, additional treatments, and other data about health care services provided to the patient. Medical Billers duties often depend on their employer and how large or small their work facility is.

Medical Insurance Billers and Coders regularly take on a number of vital responsibilities, including:

Medical Insurance Biller & Coder – Distance Education Course Material

The Medical Insurance Biller & Coder - Distance Education program at North-West College is designed to provide a comprehensive working knowledge of all phases of medical insurance, consisting of billing, pre-authorization follow-up techniques, posting insurance payments and more. The program is divided into eight class course modules, including a hands-on clinical internship where students have the opportunity to gain experience applying the skills learned in the classroom in an actual health care or business setting.

Courses for this program include:

  • Seminar for Success  - This is an orientation and success building course for Career Students, which includes a review of basic math, language, vocabulary, and writing skills. It also offers an introduction to core career classes, covers the availability of community resources, how to outline and summarize, and managing credit, along with other life skills.
  • Medical Financial Procedures  - This course covers everything from medical terminology and transcribing to payroll, banking, and bank reconciliation. Students will also learn about bookkeeping, day sheets, and accounts payable and accounts receivable, along with invoices.
  • Secretarial  - Students have the chance to learn about medical terminology, correspondence, memos, filing and maintaining medical records, and handling mail. The curriculum also covers Accounts Receivable, Collections, Processing Patients, Medical and Legal Issues, and Medical Ethics.
  • Insurance I  - In this course, students dive into Medical & Extensive Insurance Terminology, CPT Coding, HCPCS, and ICD-9 CM Coding. They also cover Processing Insurance Forms: Private Insurance, Medicare, Medi-Cal, Medi/Medi, and Electronic Billing.
  • Insurance II  - The study of insurance continues with Insurance Terminology, CPT Coding, and ICD-9 CM Coding, along with Insurance Billing (CMA-1500) for Private Insurance, Medicare, Medi-Cal, SDI, Worker’s Compensation, and Insurance Verification.
  • Communications / Insurance III / Computers  - In this course, students cover Insurance Contracts, as well as how to review and verifify patient benefits. Curriculum includes Insurance Plan Provisions, Facility Billing, coordinating benefits, and types of adjustments. Students receive an overview of Dental Terminology and Dental Claims, and Medical and Insurance Terminology. They also cover Résumés, Employment Applications, and take part in Mock Interviews. They will learn about establishing rapport with fellow Team Members, how to offer courtesy and respect, maintain professional conduct. In addition, students will study Doctor and Medical Specialties, CPT Coding, ICD-9 CM Coding, and an overview of Health Claims Examining, Lymphatic, Cardiovascular, and Integumentary Systems. The course also covers an Introduction to Computers, Word, Excel, Medi-Soft, Processing Electronic Insurance Claims, and Creating Professional Quality Résumés.
  • Career Seminar  - This course offers an Internship Workshop, Career Readiness Workshops, a New Student Orientation, and CPR Certification.
  • Clinical Internship  - This is the Internship where students have the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills learned in the classroom in a real health care setting.

Medical Insurance Biller & Coder – Distance Education Course Activities

Medical Insurance Billers and Coders organize and manage health information data by making sure it is accessible, accurate, and secure in both paper files and electronic systems. They use a number of different classification systems to code and categorize patient information for insurance reimbursement, for registries and databases, and to maintain patients’ medical and treatment histories.
